James — Addition in Minneapolis, MN

Addition

James

Minneapolis, MN2021Design by Maria Palmer

The James project in Minneapolis is a story about a family that had outgrown their home but loved their neighborhood too much to leave. Rather than uprooting and moving to a larger house, they chose to expand — adding square footage that would give them the space they needed while keeping the location, the neighbors, and the community they'd spent years building. MSP Homes designed and built an addition that feels like it was always part of the original house.

The Challenge

Home additions are among the most complex projects in residential construction. They require careful structural integration with the existing building, thoughtful design to ensure the new space feels connected rather than tacked on, and meticulous attention to exterior detailing so the addition doesn't look like an addition. The James project had the additional challenge of a tight lot with limited setback — the addition had to be designed within precise dimensional constraints while still delivering the square footage the family needed.

Our Approach

How we solved it

The design process began with a thorough analysis of the existing home's architecture — its roofline, exterior materials, window proportions, and interior flow. The addition was designed to mirror the existing home's architectural language: matching the roofline pitch, using the same exterior siding profile, and aligning the window heights with the existing windows. Inside, the addition was planned to flow naturally from the existing spaces — the new primary suite connects directly to the master bedroom, and the new living space extends the main floor's open plan rather than creating a separate room.

Project Highlights

Seamless Architectural Integration

The most important success criterion for any home addition is that it doesn't look like an addition. The James addition achieves this through careful attention to roofline continuity, matching exterior materials, and aligned window proportions. From the street, the addition reads as part of the original home — a testament to the design work that preceded the construction. Visitors who didn't know the home before the addition simply can't tell where the original house ends and the addition begins.

New Primary Suite with Vaulted Ceiling

The addition's primary purpose was to create a primary suite that the original home lacked. The new suite includes a spacious bedroom with a vaulted ceiling — made possible by the addition's new roofline — a primary bathroom with a walk-in shower and double vanity, and a walk-in closet with custom built-ins. The vaulted ceiling gives the bedroom a sense of volume that transforms it from a room into a retreat.

Expanded Main Floor Living Space

In addition to the primary suite, the addition expanded the main floor living area — creating a family room that connects to the existing kitchen and dining area. The new family room features large windows that bring in natural light and frame the backyard, a gas fireplace with a custom tile surround, and built-in shelving that provides both storage and display space.

Exterior Detailing and Curb Appeal

The exterior of the addition was designed to enhance the home's curb appeal rather than simply extend it. New James Hardie siding on the addition was matched to the existing home's profile, and the addition's roofline was designed to create an architectural moment — a shed dormer that adds visual interest and brings light into the upper level. New landscaping around the addition's foundation completed the exterior transformation.

The Result

The Outcome

The James addition gave a family the space they needed without sacrificing the neighborhood they loved. The new primary suite has transformed the master bedroom experience, the expanded living area has become the family's primary gathering space, and the seamless exterior integration means that the addition has become an invisible part of the home's story — which is exactly what a great addition should do.

"We didn't want to move — we wanted our home to grow with us. MSP Homes made that possible. The addition feels like it was always there, and the new primary suite is everything we hoped for."
