The Harriet project sits in one of Minneapolis's most beloved neighborhoods — the Lake Harriet area, where craftsman bungalows and Tudor revivals line the streets and the lake is a five-minute walk from the front door. The home had the character and location that buyers dream about, but the interior had been updated piecemeal over decades, resulting in a mix of styles and finishes that felt more accidental than intentional. MSP Homes was tasked with bringing coherence to the home while honoring the architectural character that made it special.
Remodeling a historic Minneapolis home requires a different sensibility than working on newer construction. The Harriet home had original woodwork, period-appropriate proportions, and architectural details that deserved to be preserved — but it also had a kitchen that hadn't been updated since the 1980s, bathrooms with fixtures from multiple decades, and flooring that was a patchwork of different materials and finishes. The challenge was to modernize the home comprehensively while maintaining the character that made it worth preserving.

Craftsman-inspired kitchen — shaker cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops, oil-rubbed bronze hardware

Original hardwood floors refinished — preserved craftsman woodwork and built-in bookcases
How we solved it
Maria's design approach for Harriet was rooted in the concept of 'respectful modernization' — updating the home's finishes and functionality while maintaining its architectural DNA. The original woodwork was preserved and refinished rather than replaced. The kitchen was updated with cabinetry that referenced the home's craftsman character — shaker-style doors with period-appropriate hardware — while incorporating modern appliances and a functional layout. The bathrooms were updated with tile and fixtures that felt appropriate to the home's era while meeting modern standards of comfort.
The Harriet home's original woodwork — window casings, door frames, built-in bookcases, and the original staircase — was carefully preserved and refinished. This was the most labor-intensive decision in the project, but it was the right one: the original woodwork is what gives the home its character, and replacing it with modern trim would have been an irreversible loss. The refinished woodwork now anchors the home's updated interior with a sense of history and craftsmanship that new construction simply can't replicate.
The kitchen update was designed to feel like it belonged in the home's era while functioning like a modern kitchen. Shaker-style cabinetry in a warm white with oil-rubbed bronze hardware references the craftsman tradition. The countertops are honed Carrara marble — a material with period-appropriate associations that also happens to be beautiful and durable. The backsplash is a classic white subway tile with a dark grout that gives it a slightly vintage feel. New stainless appliances are integrated seamlessly into the design.
Both bathrooms were updated with tile choices that felt appropriate to the home's craftsman character: hexagonal mosaic floor tile in a warm white, subway tile walls with a classic running bond pattern, and pedestal sinks that reference the home's original plumbing era. The primary bathroom received a new walk-in shower with a frameless glass enclosure — a modern element that was introduced carefully to avoid disrupting the bathroom's period character.
The original hardwood floors — narrow-strip red oak in a warm honey tone — were refinished rather than replaced. This decision preserved the floors' character and patina while restoring their beauty. The refinished floors are now the visual foundation of the home's main level, connecting the spaces with a warmth and continuity that new flooring couldn't have provided.
The Result
The Harriet whole-home remodel is a project that MSP Homes is particularly proud of — not because it was the most dramatic transformation in the portfolio, but because it was the most thoughtful. The home looks and feels like a beautifully maintained historic Minneapolis home, not a renovated one. The original character is intact. The modern updates are seamless. And the family has a home that honors the neighborhood's architectural heritage while meeting every contemporary standard of comfort and functionality.
"We bought this house for its character and its location — and we were terrified that a remodel would strip away what made it special. MSP Homes understood that completely. They made it modern without making it generic."
