The Dewey Hill project holds a special place in MSP Homes' story — it's the home where Scott and Maria Palmer live and work. Located on Dewey Hill Road in Edina, this whole-home remodel was both a personal project and a professional showcase: every design decision was made with the same care and intentionality that MSP Homes brings to every client project, and the result is a home that serves as a living portfolio of what the team is capable of.
This Edina home on Dewey Hill Road had been in the family for years, but the layout and finishes were showing their age. The kitchen was compartmentalized and dark, the mudroom was an afterthought, and the bedrooms felt disconnected from the rest of the home's character. The owners wanted a full renovation that would modernize the home without losing its warmth — and because this was their own home, Scott and Maria had the freedom to make design choices that pushed the boundaries of their typical work and expanded their design vocabulary.

Modern farmhouse kitchen — white shaker cabinetry to ceiling, wood island base, matte black hardware

Kitchen sink detail — designer faucet, subway tile backsplash, open shelving

Range wall — custom hood, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, professional range
How we solved it
Maria led the design process, developing a cohesive material palette that would work across every room. The kitchen was the centerpiece — opening it up to the living area was the single biggest move that transformed how the whole main floor felt. Maria chose a modern farmhouse aesthetic: shiplap accents, warm white cabinetry, black hardware and fixtures, and natural wood tones that create warmth without feeling rustic. Custom mudroom built-ins were designed to handle the realities of a busy family, and the bedrooms were refreshed with new flooring, trim, and lighting to tie everything together.
The kitchen was opened to the living area and completely rebuilt with custom white shaker cabinetry that extends to the ceiling, a large island with a contrasting warm wood base and white quartz top, and a designer tile backsplash. Open shelving on one wall adds visual lightness and display space. Matte black hardware and fixtures throughout create a crisp, modern edge that keeps the farmhouse aesthetic from feeling too traditional.
A purpose-built mudroom with individual cubbies, hooks, bench seating, and overhead storage replaced a bare entry hallway. The built-ins are painted in a warm white with brass hardware to match the kitchen — a design decision that makes the mudroom feel like a continuation of the kitchen rather than a separate space. The bench has storage beneath it, and every family member has their own cubby. It's the detail that makes daily life run more smoothly.
Throughout the home, shiplap accent walls, board-and-batten wainscoting, and custom millwork add the architectural character that the home lacked. The entry foyer features a shiplap wall with a custom built-in bench and hooks. The living room's shiplap fireplace surround is the focal point of the main floor. These details are the difference between a renovated home and a designed one.
All bedrooms received new wide-plank hardwood floors, updated trim and doors, and new lighting fixtures — creating a consistent, elevated feel throughout the upper level. The primary suite received particular attention: a new walk-in closet with custom built-in shelving and a primary bathroom with a walk-in shower and double vanity.
The Result
The Dewey Hill renovation gave this Edina family a home that finally works as well as it looks. The open kitchen is now the heart of the house, and the mudroom actually handles the chaos of daily life. The project was completed on schedule and within budget, and the family moved back in to a home that felt completely new — but still completely theirs. It now serves as a portfolio piece that clients can visit, a testament to what a whole-home remodel can achieve when design and construction work in perfect alignment.
"MSP did a fabulous reconstruction of our kitchen! Scott Palmer was very flexible to work with. We especially appreciated working with his designer. We highly recommend him."
